Earth Hour

Earth  Hour is the largest campaign in the history of this planet. Earth Hour is an event organized by WWF (World Wildlife Fund) and which is held on Saturday of March, asking people to turn off their non-essential lights and other appliances for on hour to use awareness towards the need of action on climate change. The way this movement works is it's a call to every individual, every business, and every community around the world to take responsibility and turn off their lights and appliances, such as TVs, computers, etc. at 8:30 and turn it back on at 9:30. Earth Hour 2011 will take place on Saturday, March 26 at 8:30PM (local time).

Earth hour is a world wide event, and many countries are also participating such as United States, Philippines, Australia, India, Italy, etc. So we have more help around the world to conserve energy, and by knowing that a lot of people are helping, it makes us want to join and help out the environment as well. Earth Hour originally started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned of their lights for one hour to take stand against climate change. A year later, Earth Hour became a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries participating. Some of the major landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, CN Tower in Toronto, Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Rome’s Colosseum, also took part in the world wide event.

Earth Hour 2008 was held internationally on March 28, 2008 from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. local time, marking the first anniversary of the event. With 35 countries and over 400 cities also supporting In 2009 Earth Hour was from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time, March 28, 2009. 88 countries and 4,159 cities participated in Earth Hour 2009, ten times more cities than Earth Hour 2008 had. In 2010 Earth Hour was held from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time, March 27. Earth Hour 2010 was reportedly the biggest Earth Hour yet, having more than the one billion participants. As you notice the numbers increasing each year more and more people are contributing, and that helps us have a positive attitude towards the environment, and the numbers are just going keep increasing as years go by, because people see the change and difference they are making to our planet, and they like it, so they are going to continue it.

I personally think that Earth Hour is an outstanding event that happens one each year. It gives people a change to contribute to their environment. Earth Hour doesn't have to be a boring event, you can get with family and friends, to play games or do activities just to pass time. By doing that you’re saving a lot of energy, and also having fun. I’m most definitely looking forward to Earth Hour 2011, and I will be contributing for as long as it goes.
